    email outages/Spam filter problems?

I've had several sites who have had no email since before noon today, Thursday, 7/16/09.

I spoke to Clint around 5pm and found out that there was a spam filter problem that had been resolved and the server was catching up.

Its been nearly 2 hours since then, and still no messages.

And no post on the service/availability forum.

Does anyone know what is going on?  If/when it will get resolved?

I've only one site which has had no email since 16:00 GMT yesterday.  I have however reset my password for this forum for which I received email which leads me to assume incoming external email is caught up in this spam filter problem.

Has anyone got an update ?

    Re: email outages/Spam filter problems?

So I've been testing since about 7am (EST) and it looks like external messages are still not getting through.  Messages generated/sent-through the iHost  serves are getting through (not surprisingly).

iHost informed how to add an MX record so new incoming messages bypass the spam filter and go directly to the email box server. But iHost don't recommend it because:

    1. This does NOT address messages already queued up in the spam server, so it would only circumvent the delays for newly generated messages.
    2. It does require propagation time for the DNS change to take place.
    3. It does expose you to spam or other malicious messages that would normally be screened out.

I've done it for one test account, and my test messages are getting through.

I did it for one of my customer accounts, and they have not acknowledged any of my test messages.  But it may just be a propagation timing issue.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE MY ADVICE ON THIS - I"M NOT QUALIFIED!  ASK iHOST FOR THEIR ADVICE!

    I'm dying.

Many thanks for the info.  Has there been a support ticket raised for this?  Is there any point as it's already being dealt with?

I'd rather leave my settings in place and hope the spam filter problems are sorted soon but it all depends on the estimated time to fix.

Can someone from iHost post a status update here maybe?

I have one open incident, and the latest feedback I got was this at 10:09 AM Eastern time.  Personally, I'd open an incident, if only to get notifications of updates from them instead of me, and to make it clear to them that other people besides me are affected (I'm feeling lonely).

The spam filters remove any suspicous or harmful mail including spam, viruses, harmful content, etc. We definitely recommend being careful with unknown mail if you are currently bypassing the spam filters. We have been continuing to work on this issue and our 2nd level technicians have reported that they are making progress with the issue and that it should be fully corrected soon.

The problem is apparently system-wide. I spoke with technical support at about 11:00 AM CDT, and they said the span filters had been corrected, and that backlogged mail was being delivered. I did a test around 11:30 AM CDT, and my test message got through, but my backlogged email hasn't been delivered.

    Re: email outages/Spam filter problems?

Hi guys and gals, I'll chime in to clarify a bit as to what has been happening here.

The inbound spam and virus filtering servers appliances which most of your MX records point to have been severely overloaded for about 24 hours now due to a massive SPAM DDOS campaign that started late Wednesday night. Basically number of our customer domains that we host are being spoofed by external spammers. As result we were receiving millions of messages per hour which have resulted in MailFoundry spam filters to queue up millions of unprocessed messages. The problem is compounded by the fact the inbound queue disks have filled up with several hundred gigs worth of spam mixed with legitimate messages. Since this morning we have reconfigured spam filters to LIFO (Last In First Out) processing, this means the priority is given to a real-time message rather than a queue. Our goal is to reestablish real-time spam and virus scanning to all domains, then once the DDOS load wanes the queue will begin to be processed. As I’m writing this the inbound queue count is steadily decreasing, so we have reasons to believe the bulk of queued messages should be delivered within 6 hours barring a drastic increase in SPAM volume. The engineers from Solunis Inc. (our spam filtering hardware vendor) are currently logged in to the spam firewall boxes and are making adjustments to counter spam patterns.

    Re: email outages/Spam filter problems?

We have posted an announcement several hours ago regarding this issue here http://community.ihostasp.net/forums/t/228.aspx. As you can imagine we have been swamped with phone calls and support tickets today. This issue is under control, it will simply take time for everything to settle down back to normal. We will update that thread with any relevant information as it becomes available, we appreciate your patience and understanding.
